![]() I like my melancholy island games.įelix: for me, this was the exact moment that Square fell off a cliff, never to recover. Maybe I just like it because it's reminiscent of Chrono Cross and The Wind Waker. It's hokey in a nostalgic, 90s-anime kinda way. The writers seem like they were really enamored with Xenogears when they came up with the plot, which is okay by me. The minigames are so sadistically, uniquely awful that it becomes hilarious. The art direction and soundtrack are first-rate. The world is pretty imaginative and interesting, which is notable in a series only sporadically known for thoughtful world-building. The pacing is as tight and consistent as anything I've ever seen in the genre this side of Chrono Trigger. The battle system (which borrows stealthily from FF Tactics) is one of the best turn-based RPG systems of all time. None of the most common points of criticism ever seemed especially bad to me: the plot, the voice acting, the alleged linearity, the Sphere Grid. ![]() Ni Go Zero Ichi: This is one of my big SB-taboo opinions (along with “ Ocarina of Time is good” and “some parts of Demon's Souls are bullshit”) but I really don't think FF10 is that bad in fact I think it's one of the better games in the series.
